Coffee
I love coffee. You might think that is strange for a dog. But you have to remember that I am a Havanese. We are from Havana, Cuba, and coffee is a big deal in Cuba. Somehow I got the Prince into the habit of giving me a bit of the coffeelicious foam from the top of his cappuccino every morning. At this point he can’t refuse me because I keep bugging him until he gives it to me. That’s one of the secrets of being an effective canine. Once you get your humans into a positive habit, you have to reinforce all the time. So we have our little morning ritual. The prince makes his cappuccino and I sit patiently by, waiting for him. When he’s done he spoons a bit of the foam into a little heart shaped dish, and I get my morning coffee treat! It’s heaven.
Unfortunately, the Prince sent the espresso machine back to the factory for maintenance yesterday, so it looks like we will be without proper cappuccino foam for a while. He made regular drip coffee this morning and gave me a bit, but it just wasn’t the same.
Award for Jane
Everyone is so excited because Jane got an award at school today. She received the American History Award, which is I guess a pretty big deal judging by the way they are carrying on.
The Prince took this picture which is kind of cute of Jane. I do love her although she bugs me sometimes! That’s an American flag she’s wearing on her face.

Carsick
I don’t usually get car sick. But I wasn’t feeling all that well yesterday anyway. Mama invited me to go pick up Jane at school, so of course I accepted and jumped in the car with my usual good cheer. I love riding in cars. (I wish they’d open the windows more often because I really love to stick my head out and feel the breeze f
lowing through my fur, but I digress…) Anyway, everything started off fine, but when we got to the school parking lot, I just started to feel kind of sick. And I just happened to be sitting on Mama’s lap, and well, I threw up all over her! It was so embarrassing, but what could I do. Mama was kind of shocked. She didn’t invite me to go pick up Jane at school the next day, either!
Saint Joseph Ballet
This has been a tough week for me. I’ve been left home alone just about every night, which is highly unusual. Jane is appearing in the Saint Joseph Ballet Spring Concert at the Irvine Barclay Theater, so she’s been doing that and the parents are watching, which leaves me alone, sitting at home. This is not how I like to spend my time. Not that I don’t support the Saint Joseph Ballet, because I do. I hear the Prince and Mama talking about it all the time, about all the great things it accomplishes, all the seniors getting into college, the family services, the great dance training and performance opportunities for underprivileged youth. The prince suggests people make a donation to SJB here. He’s always trying to raise funds for them. But still, I just wish I could go to the theater sometimes! I can dance, you know. Leave a comment!
Kibbles (Ugh!)
Has anyone ever really thought about the cruelty of feeding kibbles to dogs? I’ve heard Mama (aka the Princess) say that they are good for a dog’s digestive system. Hah! You try eating that stuff. It is totally inedible. I don’t notice anyone else in the house eating kibbles!
The Prince does give me little treats on top of my kibbles, which I do love and always eat right away.
The kibbles I leave until I am so hungry I would eat just about anything.
When I do get around to eating those awful balls of glue mixed with sawdust, I do a “Havanese” thing: I pick up a kibble out of my bowl, and carry it somewhere a few feet away, drop it, sniff it a bit, and then eat it. Not sure why I do that, but I think I learned it from my mother, Peaches. Some day I will write more about dear old Mom. And Aunt Rosie, who I’m said to favor quite a bit.
Chewing Tissue
We Havanese are sort of famous for our love of chewing tissue. Not any paper mind you, but soft, tender bathroom tissue or facial tissue (such as Kleenex). Why? Well, have you tried it. It is so delicious. It’s so much fun just to tear it up and leave it all over the floor! Who wouldn’t love it? Just about every Havanese will tell you that this is one of their favorite things to do.
AI
Everyone at my house was really happy about David Cook winning American Idol last night. Everyone whooped when it was announced. Jane of course said she picked him from the start. She seems to have some talent at that, since she picked Bo Bice to win too… oh wait, he didn’t win, did he? Anyway, I digress. Mike Myers’ bit was funny but what a shameless tie-in! No matter. It was a good show overall and justice prevailed with the new idol being David Cook. The Prince liked David A. and predicted he would win early in the season, so he wasn’t far off.
On another subject, I heard them talking about me getting groomed on Friday. I hate getting groomed! But it will be nice to shed a bit of this fur for summer. It was really hot this weekend when Jane was making me jump over an obstacle course in 90 degree weather. You try doing that with a fur coat on!
I Am Ruffles, Hear Me Bark
Hello there. Thank you for visiting my blog. I am Ruffles, a four year old Havanese. In this blog I will give my thoughts about life as a Havanese, and offer some observations on the crazy, stupid things that humans do.
Welcome to my blog. I am Ruffles, a three year old Havanese. Here is a picture of me:
